REBA’s landmark lawsuit against NREIS (National Real Estate Information Services), a Pittsburgh-based non-lawyer settlement services provider has moved into the deposition phase of pre-trial discovery. NREIS has close ties to the Title/Appraisal Vendor Management Assocation (TAVMA), a trade association of non-lawyer settlement services providers seeking to overturn by legislative action Superior Court decisions on the practice of law by non-lawyers, including the Colonial Title & Escrow (2001) decision.

Additionally, in response to leads and information provided by REBA members, the Association’s UPL counsel has directed caution letters to nearly 100 other non-lawyer witness or notary closing firms. For a complete listing of non-lawyer witness closing firms reported by REBA members, click here. If you have encountered a non-lawyer witness closing firm doing business in Massachusetts that does not appear on this list, please report it to REBA’s UPL committee at upl@reba.net.
